Honoring Gwen Ifill ’77, ’93HD
The Gwen Ifill College of Media, Arts, and Humanities opened its doors this fall.
Last November, Simmons announced plans to name the new college for the late journalist and distinguished alumna Gwen Ifill as a way to honor and extend her legacy. The Gwen Ifill College is one of four new colleges Simmons is launching this fall; it’s the result of an academic redesign initiative that began three years ago. The College of Media, Arts, and Humanities is the first of the four colleges to be named.
“For over 100 years, our mission at Simmons has been to prepare our students to lead meaningful lives and build successful careers. Gwen’s example stands tall in that mission,” said President Helen Drinan when she announced the naming of Gwen Ifill College. “The kind of unimpeded curiosity Gwen brought to her work, coupled with her warmth, integrity, and commitment to truth-telling, is something all of our students aspire to—no matter what field of study they pursue.”
Simmons conferred with Gwen Ifill’s family about naming the College of Media, Arts, and Humanities in her honor. And President Drinan reported in November that the family “wholeheartedly supports our vision” for the college.
“Simmons was a launching pad for Gwen and prepared her well,” said Roberto Ifill, Gwen’s brother.
